The grind school
What it gives you
A grind school gives you a structured overview of the syllabus, delivered by someone who knows the exam well. The lectures are usually solid. For candidates who need a framework and do not know where to start, a grind course is a reasonable option.
Where it falls short
Grind schools run on a fixed timetable you have to attend. They do not give feedback on your specific answers against the specific standard the examiner applied. One subject costs €250 or more. Eight subjects at a grind school costs upwards of €2,000. For many candidates, that is not realistic. And once the course finishes, you are on your own.

What it gives you

Where it falls short
At €50 to €150 per hour, a serious preparation block across three subjects costs €600 to €2,000 in tutor time alone. Most candidates cannot sustain that. Finding a tutor who knows FE-1 specifically is harder than it sounds. And the feedback is still constrained to whatever the tutor has read, not a validated database of 1,781 Irish authorities.

Classmates' notes
What it gives you
Free, immediately available, and often written by someone who sat the same exam. Notes circulate through WhatsApp groups and firm intranets. For many candidates this is the default.
Where it falls short
Notes circulate without attribution, without verification, and without any check against the current law. The Defamation (Amendment) Act 2026 abolished the Reynolds defence in February 2026. Crawford v DPP [2024] IESC 44 changed self-defence law in October 2024. Notes written in 2023 or 2024 will not have either change. Studying from out-of-date, unverified notes means your answers cite positions that are no longer the law before the examiner reads your first paragraph.
